The Great Hadeeth of Jibreel

Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem

The Great Hadeeth of Jibreel is a master piece of hadeeth literature. Subhanallah! It summarizes Islam in a nutshell. Both, teachers and students, have great lessons to learn from this fabulous hadeeth.

From ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (radiyallaahu ‘anhu) who said:Whilst we were sitting with Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) one day when a man came to us whose clothes were extremely white and whose hair was extremely black.

No trace of his having travelled could be seen upon him and none of us knew him.

So he sat down with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and he put his two knees with his (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) two knees, and he put his two hands on his two (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) thighs.

He said: O Muhammad! Inform me about al-Islam.

So Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Islam is that you testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, that you establish the Prayer, that you give the Zakah and that you fast (in the month of) Ramadan and that you make Hajj to the House if you are able to get there.

He said:You have spoken the truth.

So we were surprised with him, he asking him and (then) telling him that he had spoken the truth!

He said: Then inform me about Eemaan.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Eemaan is that you truly believe in Allah and His Angels and His Books and His Messengers and the Last Day and that you truly believe in the Pre-decree (Qadr), the good of it and the evil of it.

He said:
You have spoken the truth.”

“Then tell me about Ihsaan.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: It is that you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him and even though you do not see him, yet He certainly sees you.

He said: Then inform me about the Last Hour.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: The one who is questioned about it does not know any better than the one who is asking.

He said: Then inform me about its signs.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: That the slave girl will give birth to her mistress and that you will see the bare-footed, naked and destitute shepherds of sheep competing to build high buildings.

Then he went off, so he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained for some time and then,

He said:O ‘Umar! Do you know who the questioner was?

I said:Allah and His Messenger know best.

He said:He was Jibreel – he came to you to teach you your Religion. (Hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim)

Here are a few ethics we find in this hadeeth:

* We should have clear intention, i.e. to teach and seek knowledge for the sake of Allah alone.

* We should be clean and wear neat and tidy clothes

* We should sit properly and close to the speaker.

” We should ask short, good and pertinent questions to gain better understanding

* We should answer in a brief way, not beating around the bush!

* We should seek knowledge from the right authority and source.

* We should maintain good listening skills.

Jazakumullah Khayr for reading this post. Vassalam.
